Christopher Lee speaks out about the editing decisions to RotK noted here, and he sounds quite put off. I’m worried too, frankly, but I’ll assume PJ knows what he’s doing. (Via Metafilter. Speaking of which, thanks to Kestrel’s Nest for Mefi’ing my TTT:EE review and effectively doubling my hits today, not that I still check that kinda thing, of course. I also liked the poster who suggested that the GOP is behind the Saruman cut, a la Ronald Reagan.)

I do understand that sometimes scenes that one would otherwise love to keep in a movie have to be cut for pacing reasons (as well as economic reasons; four-hour movies can’t have enough daily showings to make enough money). As my writing teacher in graduate school said, ‘You have to learn to be able to murder your darlings.”
At least Peter says the scenes will return in the DVDs, and I’m getting to the point where I consider those to the the “offical” versions anyway. One day when the ROTK:EE is out on DVD, we’ll have an all-day marathon at our house.
We’ll see — I said the other day that I have no reason to distrust Peter (whereupon I was immediately reminded, “except for his glowing review of ‘Cabin Fever'”, which was a huge, steaming pile of crap).
Hrm. Do we have any idea what these scenes are? Assuming there really IS no Scouring (ie that it was not shot at all) then there are no Saruman-as-Sharkey scenes. What else could there be in ROTK? Well, I suppose the scenes when Gandalf confronts him and Grima tosses the palantir from the tower. (TTT, but ROTK for movie purposes.) But Lee used the term “climax” — so are we talking about something not in the books?
I think I have a pretty good sense of what was supposed to happen, but since it’s megaspoilerish I’ll tell you in person.
