R.I.P. Hunter S. Thompson 1937-2005. Oh, no...this is terrible news. Yes, his writing had been inconsistent in recent years, but Thompson at his take-no-prisoners best was a brilliant, lacerating voice that pierced through the platitudes and hypocrisy of so much of this world. This final succumbing to the Fear and Loathing, especially at this dark political hour when we need him most, is too, too tragic.
I had several links to catch up on after my trip, but frankly right now my heart isn't in it. Godspeed, HST.

I am without words at this point, and that's not a normal situation for me, as my friends would be quick to say. My son just called me to see if I knew the news. I did not and was hit like that "ton of bricks". We are now missing a piece of Amerika that so many did not know...Our heart is saddened.
Hunter S. Thompson was the prophet of the lost generation. A true bohemian an intellectual, a man of our times. I am only sixteen but this man still has given so much inspiration. I saw the news on MSN. And tears swell up inside me when I feel how I never had the honor of meeting him. He was more then a writer he was one of the rare ones who bridged the gap between literature and madness. I don't know what tradgy that brought him to do what he did but I am comferted only by the books he's left behind. Those who diregaurd his works are narrow minded conservatives who he never wasted time with. HE told the truth when the leaders of the world didn't. I feel sad to say that tonight America has lost its last great writer.
We feel just a little less at ease tonight, upon learning that the great sooth-sayer has been silenced. Who now can be counted on to tell us the truth?

Hunter, himself, would have to write the words to express what i feel, as i and the rest of the world of writers, are incapable. I hope he has found what he's looking for and finds a way to write about it. Hunter... thanks for being... Peace, Pot, and Las Vegas, ThePotfairy
He's back to being neighbors with John Denver again. May they find peace wherever that may be. ALthough it's too soon for me, no one dictated where and when Gonzo went, and so it goes. I guess he was done here. Sad for us but a strange new trip for him.
Sad as it is I expected no less poetic an exit from Gonzo...Rest in peace dear friend....
the great gonzo well respectedby many, i hope he finds peace and manymore new trips in the after life, he will always be a great influence on many writers, he will always be rememberd and never forgotten, R.I.P. Hunter A.K.A. Gonzo, for what ever it was that made you take your life, it will never be held against you, there must have been a logical explination.

He was an awesome writer. His books were influential i guess you could say. It was shocking to hear, and now a new piece of history has begun. He may have killed himself, but i think of him as no less of a person, everyone has their reasons for what they do in life. he will be missed.
Hunter was really a visionary and a master of journalism.. and i think one of the few who understood how the world worked

A strong literary influence in my life. I'll miss his important work terrible. I agree, Kevin -- the Johnny Depp movie was an awful lot better than given credit for by the critics. What a shame.
After reading his stories and learning more about this man I have now realized that I have done nothing in my life compared to H.S.T. I can only hope that I can put my own "stamp" on life such as he.

i'll throw this into the electronic fray: you waited until after the superbowl. and did it at 67. funny, the very next day southern california was in the clutches of the lord. torrential weather in san francisco, jesus, people were dying. the last time san fran was that stirred up was right around '67. looks to me like that wave finally broke when you did. welcome to the middle. hunter, i hope the great magnet pulls my best xerox to wherever you are, you old bastard.

HUNTER WAS AN IDOL TO ME... HE WAS FREE WITH HIS THOUGHTS, MOVEMENTS AND SOAKING UP EVERY OUNCE OF THE MOMENT THERE IS TO INTAKE (IN WHAT EVER FORM) I HAVE DAY WHERE I FEEL AS IF I AM REACHING SOME OF THE LEVELS MOST HUMANS NEVER REACH... NOW I HOPE I CAN TALK TO HIM IN SPIRT. I DONT FEEL AS IF HE IS REALLY "GONE" DOES VEIWING FROM OUTSIDE.
How sad that Hunter S. thompson's remains will be fired out of a cannon. I think it would have been more in the spirit of the great man to pack a pinch of Hunter dust in .45 cal. loads and sell them to the public so that everybody could fire a bit of their favorite author into the air, with the proceeds to go to the Hunter Stockton Thompson Foundation to help provide Wild Turkey Sno-Cones to the under Privileged of our society.
That way the next time you were drunk on your ass shooting up your neighbor's trailer, you'd know that you were doing something to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
