Monkey Island or Bust.

If (like me) you prefer more old-fashioned saber-rattling, the new trailer for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean is now online. With Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and Jonathan Pryce hamming it up this much, and Keira Knightley (Rachel Weisz look out!) and/or Orlando Bloom as your eye candy of choice, this one could be fun summer afternoon fluff.

  1. Keira Hotly strikes me as more of a Natalie Portman variant, rendering her all the more delectable.

  2. Natalie Portman? She doesn’t really scream “sexiest tomboy beanpole on the planet” to me. I’d say Rachel Weisz, if only for the british accent and the luminous, wide-set eyes.

  3. I can definitely see the Weisz now that you mention it, but I still think she comes across as a more angular Portman sometimes. To wit:

  4. Ok, I’ll admit that is a Portmanesque look of CGI-induced alarm. Apparently, Ms. Portman and Ms. Knightley react much the same to a tennis ball on a stick that reads “Effect to be added later.”

In fact, additional research at this site (http://www.evilchog.co.uk/keira_knightley/index.asp, which includes a very Portman-like shot of Knightley across the top) indicates that she played Natalie Portman’s decoy in SW: Ep. 1. So you may be on to something.
