Here Come the Dirtmongers.

“‘We’re going to get a little tougher,’ a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of television ads is coming. ‘We’ve got to question this guy’s associations. Very soon. There’s no question that we have to change the subject here,’ said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity.”

In related news, why just lose when you can lose and forsake your dignity? Confronted by the fact that their guy just isn’t connecting these days, the McCain team gets set to take the low(er) road. (Indeed, their ad buys across the nation are already almost universally negative.) In other words, expect a lot of Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers from now until November.

  1. It has already begun:
Palin hits Obama for ‘terrorist’ connections.
Speaking at a fund-raising event in Colorado Saturday, Palin said: “This is not a man who sees America as you and I do – as the greatest force for good in the world,” Palin said, according to a statement released by the McCain-Palin campaign. “This is someone who sees American as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who targeted their own country.”

To me, this seems like a final, desperate gamble (in a series of them) by the McCain campaign. I don’t see how it will slow Obama’s momentum — let alone reverse it (especially when the Democratic 527s hit back with Keating, cancer, leaving his first wife, and such). It will only make the next four weeks very, very ugly. Sigh…

  2. And she’s bringing up Wright, too. Good, Sarah, since your church features anti-Semitism and witch-hunting, let’s put all of our cards on the table.
