"When asked if he knew when American troops could start to return home, McCain responded: 'No, but that's not too important. What's important is the casualties in Iraq.'" Not too important to you, maybe. While John Kerry and others jump on the latest McCain screw-up, these handy Youtubes bring us up to date on other recent goings-on aboard "the Double Talk Express." Without the Democratic primary feeding the beast anymore, hopefully Senator McCain's convenient U-turns and gaffe-a-minute tendencies will get more attention from the media powers-that-be.

Your description of McCain as a "historically bad candidate" is beginning to ring truer day by day. I thought he was smarter than all this.

McCain's day was in 2000 -- too bad he didn't make it then.
That being said, I don't think this apparent gaffe really belies any callousness on the part of McCain, and I think it would be a mistake for the Obama campaign to try and make too much of it (and they don't seem to be).

Nice! Extra points for the Costello punditry.

I'd also agree with your assessment of the quote, which is why I paired the entry with a Greatest Hits of recent gaffes. McCain is screwing himself -- There's no real need for Sen. Obama to get mightily involved in his undoing just yet.
