THE WEBLOG OF KEVIN C. MURPHY: CONJURING POLITICAL, CINEMATIC, AND CULTURAL ARCANA SINCE 1999

Lyra, daemons, and bears, oh my!

Another big fantasy trailer comes in the wake of Harry: New Line plays the LotR card to help sell audiences on the new teaser for Chris Weitz's take on Phillip Pullman's The Golden Compass. Well, the actors and the polar bears look pretty good...I'd like to see more of the daemons.

Hi Kevin!
I read this series- His Darkest Materials recently. Pretty good. No HP series but interesting none the less w/ just enough political and religious propaganda to make it interesting. Now that the movie is coming out and ideally 2 more in the making I wonder how they will skirt around the VERY religious tones... they actually kill god in the 3rd installment. Thoughts?

Hey Aimee,

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. I actually think the third book (The Subtle Knife, was it?) pretty much goes off the rails. To my mind, Pullman's so eager to throw dirt in the eye of C.S. Lewis & Narnia with his Miltonic anti-God bit that the story completely loses focus. (I also think it'll be hard to film all the anthropology stuff about the teacher and the creatures on wheels without making it seem like the huge digression it was.)

Also, I deleted the double post. Hope that's ok! :)
